While most of the optical stores depend on an auto refractor, our specialised team use various scientifically-proven techniques for conducting an eye examination like digital vision charts, advanced retinoscopy examination and the latest auto refractor. We also ensure that our patients are using the correct power glasses using a lensometer. Refractive errors are mostly common among children. Though most of the hospitals or opticians use the standard adult chart even for children, we, at AEI, have a specialised pediatric department for conducting the right kind of tests for children.

Causes for refractive errors

Refractive errors occur due to hereditary reasons or age. There is no particular reason why it occurs and in whom, so one cannot prevent refractive errors but it is important to diagnose them early.

Myopia (Near sightedness/short sight): Myopia is when you see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects are blurry. Far vision is weakened or damaged and you need glasses with negative (‘- ve ‘) power to correct the vision. The error is usually observed when trying to read some text from a distance, like scrolling news on the TV, hoardings and sign boards etc.

Hypermetropia (Far sightedness / long sight / Reading power): Hypermetropia is when you can see far objects clearly, but nearby objects are blurry. Near vision is weakened or damaged and you need glasses with positive (‘+ ve’) power to correct the vision. This error is usually observed when trying to read a text from close distance, like newspapers, magazines, cell phones etc. Presbyopia: (Hypermetropia caused by age): Most adults in their early to mid-40’s lose some ability to focus on nearby objects, making it difficult to read small print or do close-up tasks or focus on the near objects due to loss of elasticity of the lens and other muscles that help in focussing. You will need ‘+ve’ power to correct the vision.

Astigmatism: It is an error which distorts your vision, creates blurred lines and borders or stretches out images. This is caused due to improperly/unevenly curved lens, as the lens is supposed to be evenly curved to refract light correctly.

Presbyopia: (Hypermetropia caused by age): Most adults in their early to mid-40’s lose some ability to focus on nearby objects, makes them difficult to read small print or do close-up tasks or focus on the near objects due to loss of elasticity of the lens and other muscles that help in focussing. You will need ‘+ve’ power to correct the vision.
