Keratoconus:

This is a structural problem with cornea. When the usual round shape of cornea, due to various reasons, become cone shaped it is called as Keratoconus.

The tiny collagen fibres keep the cornea in shape and gives strength to the eyeball. When these collagens become weak, the cornea bulges out. These changes happening in cornea over a period will lead to blurred vision, ghosting, halos, decrease in night vision, glaring effect when looking at light.

Most of the times keratoconus presents as continually increasing power in their glasses prescription. A cornea specialist will be able to diagnose the problem on a slit lamp examination.

Cornea transplant :

If your cornea no longer lets light enter your eye properly because of some damage or disease, you may need a transplant. Also called corneal grafting, the procedure involves the corneal surgeon to remove a portion of your cornea and replace it with a new section from a donor.

Corneal transplantation are difficult surgeries which need a close follow up by a highly experienced corneal surgeon for good results. When you decide to undergo a corneal transplant, it is very important to choose a qualified corneal surgeon who has an experience in dealing with all types of surgeries. At AEI, we have a dedicated department for cornea with specialists in the field who have done fellowships from premium institutes like AIIMs and LV Prasad Eye Institute.

How can this be treated?

1. Use of Contact lenses: Early cases of keratoconus can be corrected with use of proper contact lenses. At Anand Eye Institute, we have a special wing for contact lens prescription.

2. CXL – Collagen Cross Linking: Also, called as C3R, this is a very effective way of treating Keratoconus. It’s a non-invasive and effective procedure. Being non-invasive has least side effects and it stops the further progress of the disease.
